Conference Theme

Globalization has great impact in every country affecting most of its people, especially those poor and disadvantaged. The many social and economic development strategies undertaken by governments are not often people-centred nor with active participation of the people affected. To face the challenges of globalization, economic disparity, massive unemployment and the resulting poverty of the people, we need the partnership of various stakeholders to join hands to combat poverty, inequality, social exclusion and injustice. People and communities in struggle have also developed valuable means of addressing these problems and formed network and alliance for mutual support and empowerment which should be appreciated.

The Hong Kong Conference provides a venue for project presentations and for network building. Through constructive dialogue during the conference, we hope to identify the factors affecting the successful approaches to social and community development and to arrive at recommendations for their promotion and development in the Asian and wider contexts.

It is a valuable opportunities for community development practitioners, researchers, policy makers, sponsors and promoters, as well as international aid organizations to come together to share the vision and value of community development and to actively promote its practices in their communities.
